An emerging feature of the ultrasound technology developed at the Agricultural Research Center - Hays (ARCH) is the ability to evaluate cattle upstream before they are sent to the feedlot and estimate the future carcass merit when they are harvested 100 to 150 days later. This technology is being tested this year in a national carcass contest called the                  "Best Of the Breed"

John Brethour and a few of his entry  for the "Best of Breed Contest".

Congratulations to John Brethour and his staff at the KSU Agricultural Research Center in Hays on winning the $100,000 grand prize with their entry in the "Best of Breed" Contest.
Details are below.

Cattle in the KSU-ARCH entry graded 100% Choice, 91% CAB or better and 32% Prime. They were 31% Yield Grade 2 and there were no Yield Grade #4 carcasses. 75% of these steers were produced from the research center cow herd, the Roy Soukup Ranch and the Bettenbrock Ranch, using sires raised by Green Garden Angus Farm.

In this contest cattle are selected and enrolled before they are placed on feed. The scoring is based on attaining Average Choice (to meet Certified Angus Beef specifications) or even better, USDA Prime. But cattle are penalized if they become over fat (Yield grade #4) and there are additional points awarded for carcasses that are Yield Grade #1 and #2. So, the challenge to the ARCH technology is to identify cattle with such carcass potential before enrollment. There are currently 13,500 cattle in the contest ( at least 80 head per entry).                                                                               For additional information check www.oznet.ksu.edu/wkarc/Reaearch/ARCH/cattle/bob.htm, or www.bestofbreed.com/
